Hired to drive for Andretti team in IndyCar this year, the American Alexander Rossi was announced Wednesday as the new reserve Manor (formerly Marussia), Formula 1. He will become the first driver to have simultaneous function in both categories.
In Manor, Rossi will be the direct booking of the German Pascal Wehrlein and Indonesian Rio Haryanto. The team wants to enjoy the experience of the US, which played five races by then Marussia in 2015, to compensate for the lack of mileage from their holders, rookies in F1.

"I invested most of my career in Formula 1 and I am not the type to sit around waiting for things to happen. So this is my way to keep fit and well prepared," said Rossi,

The pilot will be available for Manor in 11 of the 21 F1 calendar of races. The first will be the Grand Prix of Russia in May. Of these 11, only five will coincide with the season of IndyCar, fought almost entirely on American soil.

The chief of staff of the Manor, Dave Ryan, justified the choice of Rossi. "We need a safe pair of hands to take over this function, you always have the possibility to turn option for the race. But we also need someone who can really contribute to the development of the car," said the leader, by mentioning the experience of American.

Ryan explained that the pilot will work directly with engineers and pilots of the team to help in developing the car, MRT05 model. It will also act in marketing and outreach activities. And should be available for any emergency in case of need for the team.
